As I look back on this whirlwind of a year, I’m struck by the many lessons woven into both my personal and professional life. The hair industry, much like life itself, is full of highs and lows, and this year has been no exception. I’ve faced challenges I never saw coming, especially with my business and the ever-changing landscape of our industry.
These obstacles made me stop and think—not just about my business strategies, but about what truly matters to me. While dealing with uncertainties and personal hurdles, I found myself confronting a bigger issue that’s been quietly affecting us all: the dominance of hair extension production by certain overseas companies and the ethical questions that come with it.
It’s surprising to realise that about 80% of hair extensions now come from China. While many companies are doing things the right way, there have been reports of unethical practices by some. I’ve read articles in Indian newspapers about illicit hair purchases, where hair is smuggled across borders at night to dodge taxes. Even more troubling are accounts of child labour being used to process this hair - a harsh reality that goes against everything our industry stands for.
These revelations hit me hard. They reminded me that every strand of hair we work with has a story - not just of transformation for our clients, but of the people who provide it. The integrity of our industry depends on transparency and ethical sourcing.
This year, I’ve felt a strong urge to do more than just go with the flow. I’ve started advocating for stricter ethical standards and greater accountability among suppliers. It’s so important that we, as professionals and consumers, demand transparency and support brands that prioritise doing the right thing.
The challenges I’ve faced have been tough, but they’ve also sparked growth and a deeper commitment to making a positive difference. As we head into a new year, I feel hopeful. Hopeful that our industry can come together to uphold the highest standards of integrity. Hopeful that we can make sure every product we use reflects ethical practices and respect for human rights.
Looking back, this year has been a journey of self-discovery and a call to action. I invite all of us to use our voices and choices to shape a hair industry we can all be proud of - one that celebrates beauty, empowers people, and stands firm in its commitment to doing what’s right.
